Murgia dei Trulli

The Murgia dei Trulli region is characterised by its rural landscape - easily recognisable due to the widespread rural stone architecture, the heritage of the Itria Valley with its ancient olive trees and Macedonian oak forests.
On one of the greenest hills of the Murgia dei Trulli lies the welcoming town of Noci (BARI), a quaint town that loves to be known by its title the "City of Food and Wine". In the surrounding countrysidedry stone walls bear witness to how the patient hands of man tamed the land in order to cultivate it. As for meat you are spoiled for choice with beef, lamb, horse, and even donkey; many locally produced chickens and rabbits are also consumed.
The architectural heritage is characterised by the oldest and most visited churches in the town: S. Maria del Barsento, which stands on top of a hill and was built in 591 AD, by the Duke Tulliano, on behalf of Pope St. Gregory the Great for the monks of Saint Equizio. The Mother Church, built in 1316 in honour of the Blessed Virgin Mary of the Nativity, is in the heart of the town's historic centre. About 1 km from the town is the Santuario S. Maria della Croce, which was built in 1483 on the site where a fresco of the Madonna della Croce was found. The Madonna of Scala Abbey is about 6 km from the town and is situated on a 415 m high hill, where there was once a Benedictine monastery. The ancient abbey was destroyed and all that remains is the beautiful XII century church, which preserves the structure of the first shrines erected in Apulia by Benedictine monks in the Middle Ages.
In Noci there is a rich series of events. One of the most anticipated in Apulia is "Bacco nelle Gnostre" in November, when new wine and roast chestnuts guarantee hospitality and authentic flavours to warm the autumn.
